Colt's Manufacturing Company (CMC) was founded by Samuel Colt himself in 1836 after his successful invention of the Colt revolver. The colt revolver was equipped with a revolving cylinder that contained five or six bullets, providing more power than seen in most firearms during the era. His invention was the best-known firearm not only in the United States but Canada, Mexico and many European countries. The number of revolvers sold from then to today are over thirty million and the numbers are still growing.
The concept of the revolving cylinder has been said that Sam Colt came up with the idea while serving as a seaman. During his leisure time, Colt would carve a wooden representation of his idea. His principal was seen as remarkable in it's simplicity. By 1836, Colt built his first plant in Paterson, New Jersey and developed three different revolvers: the pocket, the belt and the hoister. Each firearm used gunpowder and bullets that were loading into a revolving cylinder while the primer was placed into a nipple located outside of the cylinder where it would then be struck by the hammer when the trigger was pulled.
Even though Colt's ideas were fantastic, his demand was extremely low and by 1842 the plant closed down. Colt then turned his attention to selling the United States government his ideas for waterproof ammunition and underwater mines. When the Mexican War broke out in 1846, Captain Samuel H. Walker of the United States Army contacted Colt right way and together they collaborated on a new design for a more powerful revolver called the “Walker”. Within a week the United States Ordnance Department ordered a thousand revolvers putting Colt back into the firearms business. By 1851, Colt became the first American manufacturer to open a plant in England when solidifying his international markets by producing the Colt Python, the M1900 pistol (semi-automatic pistol), and the M4 carbine. Being one of the top most successful gun manufacturing companies, Colt Manufacturing Company now serves the civilian market while Colt Defense serves the law enforcement, military services and private security markets.
